Yellow Rail, Aitkin County, Minnesota, 6/04. A bit soft, but the only shot I got as this little guy came running out of the marsh up to me on a causeway. It flew up in my face, flapped around a bit, and headed back into the marsh. Guess he showed me who the boss is!!

Front view of adult Purple Gallinule, Loveland, Colorado, 8/27/02. Nice view of the facial shield in this picture.

Adult Purple Gallinule striding along privet hedge. I guess if there are no lilly pads or swamp vegetation you just make do! Notice the extremely large feet designed to keep the bird on top of floating vegetation. Although it dropped into the hedge a few times the bird always popped back up and stayed there for about 30 minutes of observation and was still there when I finally left.
